How Much Data Sharing Is Enough for a Patent Application?
It depends on who you're sharing it with..!!
One of the biggest mistakes inventors make:
“I’ll just share the core idea—no need to go into all the details.”
But if you want broad, strategic patent protection, here’s the golden rule:
Disclose EVERYTHING to your patent drafter.
Include JUST OPTIMUM in the actual patent.
Why?

Because what you don’t share with your drafter, they can’t protect.
And what you overshare in your filing, you loose the edge.
Example:
You’ve built a smart wearable that detects dehydration.
If you only mention one sensor type, the patent will only cover that.
But if you also share the other versions you tested, like even the ones that failed, your drafter can claim broader coverage.
While your patent will include:
Enough technical detail to satisfy patent office requirements
Data to prove the invention works
Just optimum Strategic disclosure
So,
Strong patents aren’t just about invention.
They’re about how smartly the story is told.
Tell your drafter everything.
He/She will tell the world just enough.
